Children are not small adults. Rather, they are individuals in transition whose growth into adulthood should be supported, encouraged, and facilitated. They have a distinct way to look at the world, and have very specific needs at different points of time in their growing years.
The growth of children cannot be speeded up. They are young people with little life experiences and not fully developed brains to cope with the world and learn about themselves and others. Although children possess inner intuitive wisdom and possess an inherent tendency toward growth and maturity, their moral developmental milestones differ from adults. It takes time for a child’s capacity to make decisions about what is right or wrong to gradually evolve.
Children must be understood from a developmental perspective, as transformation to adulthood occurs by a process of biological, cognitive, and moral development in which distinct stages can be identified.
A person trained in Child Psychology will learn to appreciate children’s abilities to solve their own problems, and is well-grounded in the stages of child development.
At this Child Psychology talk, learn:
- Why is it important to understand that children are not miniature adults
- How adults, educators, parents and caregivers can support children in their growing-up years
- How to achieve positive attachment and attunement with children through play
The talk will be followed by the Course Preview of Child Psychology programmes.

– Certificate in Sandplay Therapy and Symbol Work, Expressive Therapies Institute of Australia
– Certificate in Child-Centred Play Therapy, Play Therapy Australia
Awarded as the Promising Social Worker in 2019, Lim Shen Yong utilises play therapy to support youths to work on their issues and facilitate growth. In the past 9 years, he has worked extensively with both the youths and their families on various issues such as school refusal, substance use, mobile gaming, underage smoking and youth sexuality.
Shen Yong firmly believes that adopting different play techniques is key in engaging youths who are less verbal to express their thoughts and feelings, and it helps facilitate conversation to achieve healing and realisation.
Besides helping clients through play therapy, Shen Yong loves to cycle and is an avid gardener, having gained plenty of realisations and awareness through gardening.
We welcome everyone who is interested in child psychology, children and adolescents’ mental health, or helping to bring out the best in others to join us for this online information session.
